A Merchant Category Code (MCC) is a four-digit number assigned by payment card networks to categorize the type of goods or services a merchant provides.

MCCs determine interchange rates, influence fraud screening rules, and affect regulatory compliance (e.g., gambling or pharmaceutical restrictions). Incorrect MCC assignment can result in higher interchange costs, compliance violations, or unnecessary transaction declines in certain regions.
